The focal point of a living room is that particular spot which begs attention right when you enter the room. The logical first step to choosing the right furniture is to first identifying this focal point since the tip is to place your furniture from and around there.
2. Decide on the Interior Design Theme:
This refers to the interior design theme that your furniture would need to reflect. The three basic themes are:
• Traditional: To achieve the traditional look, you need to choose furniture that looks ornate and elegant. Traditional Furniture are more formal and includes features such as ornately rolled arms, skirted bottoms and overall curved outlines. Material is usually wood while colours usually range from ivory to rich hues.

• Modern / Contemporary: This look consists of furniture that has straight, clean lines and looks very sleek. Usual material includes Metal and glass while colours range from white to any other neutral colour.

• Casual: The casual theme is all about being cozy and comfortable. This includes comfortable seating in bright colours making use of prints, patterns and anything & everything that is casual and creates a friendly ambiance.

3. Choose your furniture:
Now that you know your theme and exactly where to place your furniture, choosing the exact pieces would be child’s play! The various elements of living room furniture are:
• Sofas
• Chairs
• Ottomans and Stools
• Coffee Tables / Side Tables or Accent Table
The secret is to focus on the ‘livable part’ of the décor. Hence go for two Sofas facing each other or one sofa and two swivel chairs facing it to encourage interaction. The swivel chairs along with a few Ottomans and stools here and there creates the comfortable feel as well as can be moved around to give a new look each time. Coffee tables and other occasional tables which are movable also create a congenital atmosphere since you know that there’s always a place nearby to keep a vase, a lamp or merely to keep your drink.

Right Of The Dinner Plate – Immediately to the right of the plate is the dinner knife, the butter knife following and the dinner spoon after that, placed on the outside.

Top The Plate – The dessert fork is placed right after the plate with the tines facing right (towards the water glass). The dessert spoon is placed over the fork facing left.

Incase Of Soup – Soup is provided at the beginning of the course where the soup bowl and plate is placed in the middle of the big plate. The soup spoon can be provided with it or if you want to place it beforehand, it should be on the right hand side of the plate on the extreme right.

Large Dining Room Layout Basics:

Large dining spaces give you more flexibility in terms of the scope of choosing the Interior Décor style you want. Your furniture, their style and sizes, accessories would all depend on the décor style chosen. The layout basics are as follows:

  • The first step is to choose the dining room interior style fromTraditional, Modern and contemporary, depending on what suits your remaining home décor the most.
  • For the right furniture arrangement, one needs to start by placing the dining table in the centre and then placing all other furniture around it. In case of a separate dining room, place the dining table in the centre of the room, while in case of a combined living & dining room space, center the dining table under a lighting element.
  • Popular dining table shapes for large dining rooms are round, oval or rectangular. Once the dining table is placed, arrange all other furniture such as chairs, sideboards, etc around it maintaining the basic measurement tips given above. Avoid having round tables for seating more than 6 people. For a round table with that wide a diameter, it makes conversations pretty inconvenient.
  • If you still have space, throw in some more furniture that are either decorative accessories or have storage space for your cutlery, napkins and other dining essentials.

Small Dining room Layout Basics:

Layout options for small dining rooms are not much and the challenge lies in giving a more open and spacious look and appeal to the space. Some tips that one can follow include:

  • Have a small rectangular dining table that has an extended removable leaf. This would allow you to keep your dining space open and airy at all times while you can still seat more people by using the leaf extension when you want.
  • Seating around the table for daily living should be maximum of 2 – 4. Store your extra dining chairs all throughout the house which you can use when needed for larger gatherings.
  • Dining chairs for small dining rooms should always be armless so as to give the space a less crowded feel.
  • A round pedestal dining table also looks good in a small dining space since it makes the perimeter of your dining room / space look larger.
  • Place and arrange your accessories intelligently that takes up the least amount of space but still looks good. For example, display your favourite china not in a cabinet but on neat wall shelves. Not only will it gain you floor space but would provide a stylish visual interest to your dining space.
