5 Tips to a Great Dining Room Decor

Great friends and great food, what else does one need in life? Well maybe one more little thing… a great place to share them in! A dining room interior decor that is both cozy and comfortable in ambience and stylishly unique in decor is the call of the day! MoBEL brings to you 5 tips so that you can take pride in your beautiful dining room décor and create.

Shapes Do Matter!

If you have a long and narrow room, go for a rectangular Dining Table since it would help fill out the space and create the warm ambience that you desire. Round tables on the other hand encourage conversation. However, if you usually require more than six people’s seating, the diameter might become too big for easy conversation flow. A pedestal structure can also work well in this case since it gives more room and leg space and allows for comfortable seating of more people.

Whatever be the shape and size of the table, make sure each person has at least 24 inches of table space to comfortably have his / her meal in. Moreover, a distance of 3 feet should always remain from the table to the wall or the nearest furniture so as to allow people to move in and out of their chairs easily.

The Seat Story Redefined…

While the usual thing to do is to match the Dining Chairs with the table in terms of the look and upholstery, a recent trend is the mix-n-match fad. Throwing in an antique chair with a contemporary set up or pairing a wooden table with wicker or leather chairs are all doing very well in adding that flair and creating a style statement in your dining space. Trying out a long bench on a side instead of chairs are also an in thing that might be a hit with your friends!

The Rug-ged Surface!

In a Living Room where the space largely comprises of hard surfaces, adding any fabric or textile helps to create a softer mood and bring on warmth. A rug can do the trick beautifully for a dining space. Use a stylish rug under the dining table to straight away demarcate the dining area from your living space. It should ideally extend till about 2 feet from the dining table so that the chairs are still on the rug when your guests are seated. Other options to introduce fabric and patterns include upholstered chair covers or colorful cushions on wooden chairs.

And the Light-ning Strikes!

Hang a pendant lamp or even a chandelier over your dining table to create drama in your dining experience! Remember to install a dimmer so that you can create just the right mood when you want! Also, other tips to increase lighting and make your dining space appear larger, specially during the day time is to put a large mirror across the wall against the window.

Finally the Accents!

Lastly, one of the tips to make your dining space a fashion statement that reflects taste, style, and class is to give a finishing touch to your décor by placing carefully chosen accent pieces. This might be a vibrant wall colour as a backdrop to your dining set up, or a neutral wall accented by a dramatic piece of artwork, a beautiful centerpiece on your table or even a family heirloom put up to bring a personal touch to the place.

Modular Kitchen Layout Basics – The Types & Designs

Traditionally kitchen layouts were always about the ‘work triangle’ where only one person cooked and his or her space was usually bordered by the range, the sink and the refrigerator on the three sides. Modular kitchen layouts in current times are on the other hand built around the ‘Work zone’ concept which is more practical in the sense that it caters to the multiple-cook and multiple zone inside the kitchen aspect, aiming to create many such comfortable zones inside a kitchen space. Following is the MoBEL’s guide to Modular Kitchen Layouts so that you have the layout basics in place.

One Wall Modular Kitchen Layout: This is the ultimate space optimizing kitchen layout design and can be found in studio apartments, small flats or even lofts. The one wall layout, as the name suggests refer to the layout where all kitchen appliances, cabinets, etc are fixed on one single wall.

modular-kitchen-layout

Galley Modular Kitchen: Galley kitchen layouts are those where appliances and cabinets are fixed on two walls opposite to each other. Hence, it consists of two parallel countertops with a sort of corridor in between them, ideal for a one-cook scenario and is also commonly called as the ‘walkthrough kitchen’. This layout is one of the most popular since it makes optimum utilization of every inch of space that is available – great for small apartments where such lean and compact arrangements are required.

L Shaped Modular Kitchen: L shaped kitchens are layouts where countertops are not on parallels, but adjoining walls. Hence they are perpendicular to each other, forming an ‘L’ shape. A great layout for medium sized or even small kitchen spaces, this eliminates the corner space optimization issue that most kitchen face. The leg of the L can be as long as one needs depending on floor space but one should keep them within 12-15 ft at max in order to utilize space. The unique point of this layout is that it eliminates traffic completely and in case of bigger spaces, is flexible enough to have islands, a dining space or other work zones added on. However, this should not be used in very big kitchen spaces where other better layouts can be configured.

L Shaped Modular Kitchen

Horseshoe Modular Kitchen Layout: Horseshoe kitchen layout was primarily a design that consisted of kitchen cabinets & appliances on three walls. However, the modern horseshoe has evolved to an L shaped layout with an add-on island space as an alternative to the third wall since it allows free movement around the island.

Horseshoe Modular Kitchen Layout

Island Kitchen Layouts: Modular kitchen layouts where one has an island in the kitchen space are popularly known as the island layouts – a massive hit with people having bigger kitchen spaces. The island almost always has cabinets and storage space built into it and the surface is used for various purposes. The island countertop can be used as an additional workspace if added with a sink, an eating place if added with some stools or even a beverage store with an addition of a wine cooler. Islands are also used to convert a one wall layout into a galley one or an L shaped design into a horseshow one.

If you are calling people over for dinner, the basic requirements are that of dinner plates, side plates, cutlery, napkins and glasses to begin with. The basics are as follows:

Dining Tables

Plates – Place the big dinner place in the centre, right in front of the guest’s chair

Side Plates – In case of American Setting, the side plate or bread plate is placed on the top left corner of the dinner plate with a knife on it. While in an English setting, the side plate is kept beside the dinner plate with the butter knife on top.

Cutlery: silverware or cutlery arrangement consists of arranging the 2 or 3 forks on the left of the dinner plate, the two knives and the spoon on the right of it and the dessert fork and the dessert spoon above the plate. The art of formal dinner silverware placement or usage is – ‘Outside to inside’. Hence, during the course of one’s meal, the person would use the cutlery placed outside or farthest from the plate first. The order of arrangement is as follows:

Left Of The Dinner Plate – The thee forks are the salad fork, the meal/ dinner fork and the fish fork (if required) with the salad fork being on the outside, farthest from the plate, the meal fork in between and the fish fork if any on the inside, beside the plate.

Right Of The Dinner Plate – Immediately to the right of the plate is the dinner knife, the butter knife following and the dinner spoon after that, placed on the outside.

Top The Plate – The dessert fork is placed right after the plate with the tines facing right (towards the water glass). The dessert spoon is placed over the fork facing left.

Incase Of Soup – Soup is provided at the beginning of the course where the soup bowl and plate is placed in the middle of the big plate. The soup spoon can be provided with it or if you want to place it beforehand, it should be on the right hand side of the plate on the extreme right.

Other Cutleries – In case you need to place a cocktail fork, it should be on the extreme right after the spoon / soup spoon. For extra tea spoons, these should be placed between the second knife and the spoon.

Glasses – Glasses or Stemware is placed at the top right corner of the dinner plate. For a formal full course dinner meal, there are three glasses – the water glass, the white wine glass and the red wine glass. The three glasses are placed in a triangular formation with the water glass placed at the top right of your dinner plate (just above the dinner knife), the white wine glass on its right and the wine glass just over these two.

dining set

Napkins – There are various spots to place the napkins. These include rolling it and placing it at the centre of the dinner place, outing it inside the glass, folding it and keeping it on the side plate or just placing it on the table to the left of the forks.

Now that you are all armed with the knowledge of Dining Table setting, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and invite the town over!

Dining-Room-Layout-Design

  • Ideal space to maintain between the dining table and wall or the next piece of furniture, that would make the dining arealook spacious and comfortably set out, is 42 – 48 inches. If space is less, atleast 36 inches needs to be maintained so that people can move in and out of their chairs easily.
  • Table space per person required to be maintained for him / her to have the meal comfortably is 24 – 30 inches.
  • If you need to seat more number of guests for particular occasions, a better idea is to arrange for having smaller tables around rather than going for a bigger dining table.

Large Dining Room Layout Basics:

Large dining spaces give you more flexibility in terms of the scope of choosing the Interior Décor style you want. Your furniture, their style and sizes, accessories would all depend on the décor style chosen. The layout basics are as follows:

  • The first step is to choose the dining room interior style fromTraditional, Modern and contemporary, depending on what suits your remaining home décor the most.
  • For the right furniture arrangement, one needs to start by placing the dining table in the centre and then placing all other furniture around it. In case of a separate dining room, place the dining table in the centre of the room, while in case of a combined living & dining room space, center the dining table under a lighting element.
  • Popular dining table shapes for large dining rooms are round, oval or rectangular. Once the dining table is placed, arrange all other furniture such as chairs, sideboards, etc around it maintaining the basic measurement tips given above. Avoid having round tables for seating more than 6 people. For a round table with that wide a diameter, it makes conversations pretty inconvenient.
  • If you still have space, throw in some more furniture that are either decorative accessories or have storage space for your cutlery, napkins and other dining essentials.

Small Dining room Layout Basics:

Layout options for small dining rooms are not much and the challenge lies in giving a more open and spacious look and appeal to the space. Some tips that one can follow include:

  • Have a small rectangular dining table that has an extended removable leaf. This would allow you to keep your dining space open and airy at all times while you can still seat more people by using the leaf extension when you want.
  • Seating around the table for daily living should be maximum of 2 – 4. Store your extra dining chairs all throughout the house which you can use when needed for larger gatherings.
  • Dining chairs for small dining rooms should always be armless so as to give the space a less crowded feel.
  • A round pedestal dining table also looks good in a small dining space since it makes the perimeter of your dining room / space look larger.
  • Place and arrange your accessories intelligently that takes up the least amount of space but still looks good. For example, display your favourite china not in a cabinet but on neat wall shelves. Not only will it gain you floor space but would provide a stylish visual interest to your dining space.

Well, needless to say you are not the only one who is looking for ways to build a fab kitchen within a tight budget. The good news is that…yes, it’s possible and you’re at the right place to know exactly how!

In order to keep your modular kitchen prices down, you need to know exactly which components eat into your kitchen budget the most. The four main kitchen components that pull up the cost are –

Modular-kitchen-design

Kitchen Cabinets:

One of the major kitchen budget eat-awaysare your cabinets but the material used for the same can play a major role in keeping a check on the designing costs. The best option for kitchen cabinets are always solid wood shutters, which are usually made of teakwood, pinewood or any other solid wood and have a smooth and even finish. However these are the most expensive. Polished shutters also cost as much as the above since they are made of oakwood, rosewood or teakwood and are waterproof. Alternatively one can go for the plywoods, both commercial as well as marine, which are far less in price but are long lasting.

Kitchen Countertops:

The second component to affect your budget is your countertop and if you can play this card smartly, a 1 lac modular kitchen can be very much up your sleeve. As per latest trends, the new Tristone surface is the most suitable but also the most expensive. In case of Indian households with a 1 lac budget, one can go for granite, which is heat resistant, durable and easy to maintain, followed by other materials such as laminate, quartz and marble.

Kitchen Flooring:

This is another component that heavily eats into your budget since kitchen flooring is far more expensive then other flooring. Moreover, you need to go for a hygienic flooring type that can be cleaned easily. Popularity wise, traditional wood or stone are the most sought after kitchen flooring but again the most expensive. Marble on the other hand, is very popular but very costly and requires regular maintenance since any major spill tends to stain it permanently. To have a budget modular kitchen design, you can go for ceramic tiles that are hugely popular due to its durable, anti-skid and cleansing-friendly nature. Other flooring options to go for include porcelain and mosaic.

Kitchen Accessories:

The five main kitchen accessories include the wall and base storage unit, the drawers, the sink, the doorknobs and the cutlery trays, etc. Choosing the design and style of the above mainly depends on the space available in your kitchen. However, in order to keep from overshooting your budget, keeping some of the accessories in steel, playing around with brands, etc might be a good idea. Going for a well-designed but basic stainless steel or a porcelain sinkinstead of a mineral quartz onefor example will help you get your dream modular kitchen design well within your budget!
