Basic table layout:
If you are calling people over for dinner, the basic requirements are that of dinner plates, side plates, cutlery, napkins and glasses to begin with. The basics are as follows:
Plates – Place the big dinner place in the centre, right in front of the guest’s chair
Side Plates – In case of American Setting, the side plate or bread plate is placed on the top left corner of the dinner plate with a knife on it. While in an English setting, the side plate is kept beside the dinner plate with the butter knife on top.
Cutlery: silverware or cutlery arrangement consists of arranging the 2 or 3 forks on the left of the dinner plate, the two knives and the spoon on the right of it and the dessert fork and the dessert spoon above the plate. The art of formal dinner silverware placement or usage is – ‘Outside to inside’. Hence, during the course of one’s meal, the person would use the cutlery placed outside or farthest from the plate first. The order of arrangement is as follows:
Left Of The Dinner Plate – The thee forks are the salad fork, the meal/ dinner fork and the fish fork (if required) with the salad fork being on the outside, farthest from the plate, the meal fork in between and the fish fork if any on the inside, beside the plate.
Right Of The Dinner Plate – Immediately to the right of the plate is the dinner knife, the butter knife following and the dinner spoon after that, placed on the outside.
Top The Plate – The dessert fork is placed right after the plate with the tines facing right (towards the water glass). The dessert spoon is placed over the fork facing left.
Incase Of Soup – Soup is provided at the beginning of the course where the soup bowl and plate is placed in the middle of the big plate. The soup spoon can be provided with it or if you want to place it beforehand, it should be on the right hand side of the plate on the extreme right.
Other Cutleries – In case you need to place a cocktail fork, it should be on the extreme right after the spoon / soup spoon. For extra tea spoons, these should be placed between the second knife and the spoon.
Glasses – Glasses or Stemware is placed at the top right corner of the dinner plate. For a formal full course dinner meal, there are three glasses – the water glass, the white wine glass and the red wine glass. The three glasses are placed in a triangular formation with the water glass placed at the top right of your dinner plate (just above the dinner knife), the white wine glass on its right and the wine glass just over these two.
Napkins – There are various spots to place the napkins. These include rolling it and placing it at the centre of the dinner place, outing it inside the glass, folding it and keeping it on the side plate or just placing it on the table to the left of the forks.
